Before joining Columbia pictures in 1939, Glenn Ford acted in many West Coast stage companies. Many were flops and didn’t’ stay in production for long. One night after a performance Glenn Ford was sitting backstage with actor and friend Louis Calhern and Glenn began to complain about his encounters with the people in Hollywood:
I told him, “I know I’m no Errol Flynn. My nose isn’t right, and my mouth’s not really centered, but some girls think I look all right. Gosh, Louie,” I said, “am I really too homely to be in the movies?” And Louis said, “Hatrack, forget about the studios. You’re too talented to be begging them for crumbs. What you need to do is go to New York and get a part in a decent play. That’s where you belong. And then the studios will come begging for you.”
